For Patricia Lim, bowling has always been more than a sport, it’s community, connection, and career.

Women of Sport: From the Lanes to Leadership with Khalifa International Bowling Centre Duty Supervisor, Patricia Lim

Meet the woman helping keep Zayed Sports City’s Bowling Centre moving.

Bowling found Patricia Lim at 15 and never really let go.

Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, she trained under a federation academy, competed in youth interstate tournaments, and carried the sport with her through every chapter of her life – corporate leagues, social groups, company sports days. No matter where she went, the lanes followed. So when she moved to the UAE in 2017 and found herself at Zayed Sports City’s Khalifa International Bowling Centre a year later, it felt less like a career move and more like coming home.

Starting as a Guest Services Operative, Patricia grew through roles, responsibilities, and environments that shaped both her career and the person she is today. Now, as Duty Supervisor at the centre, she’s leading the team at the very sport and venue that have been part of her story for years or as she calls it: coming full circle. Here’s a closer look at the journey that got her there:

What’s your role in sport, and how would you describe what you do, in your own words?

I’m a duty supervisor at the bowling centre in Zayed Sports City, and in simple terms, I help make sure everything runs smoothly from the lanes to the guest experience. I’m usually the person observing what’s happening on the floor, troubleshooting when needed, supporting the team, and making sure guests feel welcomed and taken care of. What I enjoy most is that my role brings together people, operations, and sport. I get to be part of moments where families bond, teams compete, and guests discover a sport they didn’t expect to enjoy.

How did you get started in sport?

When I was younger, I loved roaming around with my school friends, and one day we happened to go bowling. I noticed a training session taking place, and it immediately captured my interest. I watched, learned, and kept coming back. Eventually, I approached the coach, and he saw potential in me. He accepted me into the academy, and from that moment, bowling really grew in my heart. It wasn’t just a hobby anymore, it became something I truly loved and wanted to pursue.

How did you find your way to your current position and role?

I wasn’t really aiming for a leadership position at the time. I was just looking for a part-time or contract role, and it so happened that I was assigned to the Bowling Centre. They were hiring for several venues, and I guess my background in bowling helped me stand out. I really enjoyed the work, getting to work and play at the same time, meeting and serving different customers, and upskilling my knowledge. Over time, I became more committed, contributing ideas to improve the venue and supporting the team. Through the experience I’ve gained over the years, I’m able to apply my knowledge and contribute meaningfully to the organization. I’m thankful that my dedication and hard work have led me to the role I hold today.

How has your role and work changed in that time?

The biggest change has been the level of responsibility that comes with leadership. When I first started, I was very much focused on task-based work, doing what needed to be done. Now, I look at the bigger picture: coordinating the team, supporting guest experiences, maintaining operational safety, and finding ways to improve the centre overall. I’ve grown from simply doing the work myself to guiding others, solving challenges as they arise, and helping create a positive environment for both guests and staff. It’s a shift that took time, but it’s rewarding to see how much more impact I can have in this role.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Morning coffee is my energy to kick-start the day. I can’t begin without it. Once I’m settled in, I do a quick walkthrough to make sure everything is in order: the system, lanes, equipment, and overall cleanliness. I also check the bookings for the day and the upcoming ones so I know what to expect. Throughout the day, I respond to emails, coordinate anything that needs attention, and work on the daily reports. It’s a mix of moving around, supporting the team, and keeping things organized,  nothing fancy, but it keeps me active, focused, and connected to what’s happening around me.

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about your work?

People are often surprised by how much goes on behind the scenes to keep the centre at Zayed Sports CIty running smoothly. It’s not just about lanes and bowling balls, it’s about understanding guests, anticipating small issues, and supporting the team throughout the day. From the outside, it might look relaxed, but there’s always something to check, adjust, or manage. In many ways, it feels a bit like being part of a live performance every day.

What’s the most rewarding part of your work?

For me, it’s the people – both guests and my team. Seeing regular customers every day, who treat the centre like their second home, feels like being part of a family under one roof, made up of different cultures and backgrounds. Watching families enjoy time together or seeing someone try bowling for the first time and genuinely enjoy it always makes me happy. Working with the team is just as meaningful. The bowling centre truly feels like a small community, and being part of that energy every day is incredibly rewarding.

And what’s the most challenging part?

The most challenging part is balancing a fast-paced environment while staying calm and composed. During busy periods, many things can happen at once such as lane issues, guest enquiries, team support, or technical hiccups. I have to quickly prioritise and handle each situation with clarity. Some days require extra patience and emotional energy, especially when dealing with different personalities or unexpected situations. By the time I get home, I’m completely drained! But these challenges also teach resilience and adaptability, and over time, I’ve learned how to stay steady under pressure while keeping the environment positive for both guests and the team.

What’s one project, event, or moment you’re most proud of?

One of my proudest experiences was being part of hosting the Open Master Games Abu Dhabi (OMGAD) at Zayed Sports City. It gave me a firsthand understanding of what it takes to plan and run a successful international event. Along the way, I had the chance to meet and connect with people from different organizations, which was both inspiring and rewarding. Receiving compliments from clients, especially when they trust you to organize their company teambuilding or events, is incredibly satisfying. It reminds me that dedication, attention to detail, and hard work really do pay off.

What excites you most about where sport is heading?

I love seeing sport becoming more inclusive for all ages, genders, and backgrounds. Bowling, in particular, is great for groups and families, it helps them bond, connect, and have fun together, while also supporting a healthy lifestyle. It’s such a joy to watch people cheer, laugh, and enjoy themselves. Moments like these show the happiness, energy, and sense of community that sport can bring.

Who inspires you, in or outside of sport?

I don’t have one specific person who inspires me, but I’ve learned a lot from different people throughout my life. I’m especially inspired by people who work quietly, stay grounded, and carry themselves with kindness. Those qualities motivate me to keep improving, stay humble, and continue learning every day.

What advice would you give to anyone stepping into your role or working in sport in general?
Stay passionate, patient, and committed. Working in sport, especially in operations and customer-facing roles really does require energy, calmness, and a willingness to keep learning. Every stage teaches you something, whether it’s dealing with people, solving problems, or building your leadership skills. My advice is to do your work with integrity, show up consistently, and take things one step at a time. If you stay genuine and keep learning, the growth and opportunities will come naturally.
