The first player announcements for the 2026 Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open are in, and they set the tone for another standout year of world-class women’s tennis in the UAE. Defending champion and Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic returns to Zayed Sports City to protect her unbeaten record, while fast-rising Filipina talent Alexandra Eala is confirmed for her second appearance at the WTA 500 event.
The tournament is back for its fourth edition from 31 January to 7 February 2026 at the International Tennis Centre, drawing global stars, regional communities, and a growing fanbase that has helped cement Abu Dhabi as one of the sport’s most energetic and inclusive destinations.
Bencic Returns for a Third Title Run
World No. 11 Belinda Bencic returns to Abu Dhabi with a formidable resume and a flawless history at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open. The Swiss star lifted the trophy in both 2023 and 2025 and remains unbeaten at the tournament, a run defined by precision, grit, and the all-court creativity that has long made her one of the most complete players on tour.

Her 2025 title, won over American Ashlyn Kruege, became one of the emotional moments of the season as she lifted the trophy with her daughter Bella on court in front of a packed crowd. The victory also marked a defining point in Bencic’s return to top form following maternity leave.
A former World No. 4, Bencic owns eight career singles titles and Olympic gold from Tokyo 2020, where she defeated Markéta Vondroušová in a three-set final.
Bencic said: “It feels amazing to be coming back to Abu Dhabi again as defending champion. The Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open is a special tournament for me – I’ve had some of my best memories here. The atmosphere is always incredible, and it means so much to return to a place where I’ve felt so much support from the fans. I’m looking forward to another great week of tennis in February.”
Alexandra Eala Continues Her Ascent
Joining Bencic in the early lineup is 20-year-old Filipina rising star Alexandra Eala, who has rapidly become one of Asia’s most exciting young athletes to watch.
Since her Abu Dhabi debut in 2024, Eala has surged through the rankings, breaking into the Top 50 this year after a series of strong tour performances. Her progression has been fast and impactful, she only cracked the Top 100 in March 2025.
A former US Open girls’ singles champion and long-time Rafa Nadal Academy player, Eala’s influence extends far beyond the court. As the highest-ranked Filipino in Tour history, she is a national icon and a symbol of a growing generation of Southeast Asian athletes pushing into global contention.
Eala said: “Playing in Abu Dhabi in 2024 was such an amazing experience. The support from the Filipino fans and the incredible atmosphere really inspired me. I’ve been working hard and have learned so much since then, and I’m thrilled to be coming back stronger for the 2026 tournament. It’s an honour to compete alongside so many top players.”
A Growing Force in Global Tennis
Nigel Gupta, Tournament Director at MARI, said: “Each year, the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open continues to strengthen its position as one of the region’s premier tennis events, and we are delighted to welcome Belinda Bencic and Alexandra Eala as the first names confirmed for 2026. Belinda has a special history with this tournament, and her return as defending champion sets the tone for another thrilling edition.”
Organised by IMG in partnership with Mubadala and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the tournament has built a reputation as one of the WTA Tour’s most significant early-season stops. The 2025 edition featured eight of the world’s Top 20 players and drew record crowds, underscoring Abu Dhabi’s growing importance within the global tennis calendar.
The 2026 event promises another week of elite tennis, community engagement, and family-friendly experiences across Zayed Sports City.
