Twelve-year-old Dubai runner Amèlie Sophia Davies is preparing to take on her biggest fundraising challenge yet, running more than 200km charity challenge throughout September in support of The Sparkle Foundation.
The month-long effort will raise funds and awareness for the charity’s work with children and families in Malawi, while also highlighting how young athletes can use sport to create positive change.
From 100 km to more than 200 km
Amèlie began running three years ago and has since become a regular competitor on Dubai’s running circuit, recording several podium finishes along the way.
Last year, she completed a 100 km fundraising challenge. This September, she will double that distance and aim to cover more than 200 km over the course of the month.
For Amèlie, the challenge is not only about testing her endurance. It is also about using something she enjoys to support others.
She said:
“I know how lucky I am to have the opportunities I have, and I want to use something I love – running – to help children who deserve the same opportunities. Last year I ran 100 km, so this year I wanted to challenge myself to go even further.”
Balancing school, training and fundraising
Throughout September, Amèlie will balance the challenge with school at RGSGD and her regular athletics training.
She will be supported by Ultimate Athletics, her running coach Coach Peter, members of The Kenyan running community and New Auto Activity, all of whom have played a role in her development as a young athlete.
In addition, Foot Locker UAE is supporting the challenge by providing running kit, while The Young Athlete is supplying electrolyte sachets to help Amèlie stay hydrated during her training and running.
Running for The Sparkle Foundation
Amèlie’s campaign aims to raise funds for The Sparkle Foundation, while encouraging others in the UAE community to support the challenge through donations, sponsorship and sharing her story.
Every kilometre completed during September will contribute to the wider fundraising effort and help support The Sparkle Foundation’s work in Malawi.
At the same time, Amèlie hopes the challenge will show other young people that sport can be used as a platform for community impact.
