Today’s episode of The Mettleset Podcast is brought to you by New Balance and Dr.stretch.

From making Olympic history for Tunisia to collecting world titles and records across multiple sports, Dr Sarra Lajnef-Taylor has built a sporting career that refuses to fit into one category.

Lajnef-Taylor became the first Tunisian woman to qualify for the Olympic Games in swimming, competing at London 2012. Since then, she has become a six-time FINA Masters World Champion, five-time Guinness World Record holder and UAE rowing champion, while also winning medals in triathlon and obstacle course racing.

But behind those achievements is a journey shaped by challenges that extend far beyond competition.

In this episode of The Mettleset Podcast, recorded at the Khalifa International Bowling Centre at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi, Lajnef-Taylor opens up about leaving Tunisia for France at just 15 years old and the experiences that followed as she pursued elite sport.

Sarra Lajnef-Taylor’s Road to London 2012

Becoming Tunisia’s first woman to qualify for the Olympics in swimming was already a historic achievement. Getting to the starting line at London 2012 brought another challenge.

Lajnef-Taylor discusses the punctured lung that nearly cost her the opportunity to compete at the Games and what it took to continue her Olympic journey despite the setback.

The conversation goes beyond the result itself to explore some of the experiences behind reaching the highest level of sport.

Beyond Swimming and the Olympic Games

Lajnef-Taylor’s sporting career did not end when her Olympic swimming chapter closed.

She went on to become a six-time FINA Masters World Champion and five-time Guinness World Record holder, while expanding her competitive career into other sports.

From becoming a UAE rowing champion to medalling in triathlon and obstacle course racing, Lajnef-Taylor has continued to challenge herself across disciplines rather than allowing one sport to define her athletic career.

The Mental Toll Behind Elite Sport

The medals, records and titles tell only part of Lajnef-Taylor’s story.

On The Mettleset Podcast, she also speaks about the mental toll of elite sport – an aspect of an athlete’s experience that can remain hidden behind performances and results.

The conversation offers a different perspective on what it can take to pursue sport at the highest level and the experiences that remain after competition ends.

Pushing for Athlete Safeguarding

Today, Lajnef-Taylor is also turning her attention towards athlete safeguarding.

Drawing on her journey through elite sport, she discusses why safeguarding athletes matters and why she is now pushing for the issue on the world stage.

It adds another chapter to a sporting journey that has taken her from Tunisia to France, the Olympic Games and competition across multiple disciplines.

And the conversation is not finished yet.

This episode is the first of what we hope will become a series of conversations with Lajnef-Taylor, with plenty more of her story still to explore.
