Heritage on the Move: Misrah’s 1,000km Desert Trek Set to Begin

A journey of grit, culture, and endurance is about to take shape in the UAE desert. Misrah, a national initiative led by Active Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, will see 100 young people embark on a 1,000km camel-back trek across the country, weaving heritage, tradition, and physical challenge into one transformative experience.

The initiative unfolds in two stages. First, 500 young men and women will train in Abu Dhabi, learning the fundamentals of camel riding, Emirati crafts, and folk arts under the guidance of the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority. From this group, 100 will be selected for the trek itself, a test of resilience that will take them deep into the desert and into the heart of Emirati identity.

Along the way, participants will rotate through heritage stations such as The Coffee House, Folk Arts Workshops, and Camel Pastures. They’ll learn to assemble saddles, care for camels, prepare traditional coffee, share stories by the fire, and take part in folk performances like Al Ayala and Al Harbiya. The experience promises not only physical challenge but also cultural immersion and a lasting connection to community and tradition.

“Misrah marks an inspiring milestone in our continued efforts to empower youth and reinforce their connection to national identity,” said Mansour Al Dhaheri, Chairman of Active Abu Dhabi. “We are proud to open registration for this unique cultural journey that blends physical challenge with deep-rooted Emirati pride. We encourage young citizens and residents to take part in this exceptional experience, which will help shape their character, enhance their skills, and deepen their appreciation for the richness of Emirati heritage.”

The trek officially begins on 21 August 2025.
